Animism: Sacred Relations Between People and Nature
In religious studies and anthropology, animism is used to discuss perspectives in which elements of the more-than-human world may be understood as having life, agency, or spiritual presence. The term has changed across academic history and does not always match the way a community describes its own beliefs.
Discussion should therefore avoid treating Indigenous communities as if they shared one uniform belief system. Language, place, and history matter.
