Roman Gods and Goddesses

Divinities of the Roman state, home, and daily life

INTRODUCTION

Understanding the tradition and its context.

Ancient Roman religion developed through household traditions, public rites, calendars, vows, and relationships between people and the numina. Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva held important positions in state cult, while Mars, Venus, Diana, Vesta, Ceres, Mercury, Neptune, Janus, and many others appeared in social and domestic life.

Roman religion was not static. Deities from other regions were also adopted and reinterpreted within the Roman world. Roman and Greek gods were often closely associated, but they were not always identical. This page is an introduction, not a complete catalogue of local cults.

REGION AND SOURCES

The Italian Peninsula and the wider Roman world; practices varied by city, era, and community.

Opening invocation for Roman Gods and Goddesses

O numina remembered through Roman homes, fields, crossroads, and public spaces, guide this reading toward clear understanding. May courage be joined with responsibility, loyalty with wisdom, and remembrance with respect.
