Germanic Gods and Goddesses

Germanic traditions and the Norse source record

INTRODUCTION

Understanding the tradition and its context.

“Germanic” covers many different peoples and traditions, not one uniform religion or fixed list of gods. For this introduction, the page focuses mainly on figures from Old Norse tradition, which belongs to the wider Germanic world.

Odin, Frigg, Thor, Freyja, and Tyr are known through Norse sources, including poems and prose written down in the Middle Ages. Other important figures include Baldr, Heimdall, Njord, Freyr, Idunn, Skadi, and the Norns. The written evidence is limited and often later than the traditions it describes.

REGION AND SOURCES

Northern Europe and Germanic-speaking regions; the most detailed written record is medieval Old Norse material.

Opening invocation for Germanic Gods and Goddesses

Odin, Frigg, Thor, Freyja, Tyr, and the names preserved in Norse poetry, receive this as a contemporary reflection. May courage remain joined to wisdom, strength protect the vulnerable, and promises be kept with honesty.

A contemporary invocation written for Parahyang; not an ancient quotation or reconstruction.
