INTRODUCTION

Understanding the tradition and its context.

Ancient Greek religion comprised many local cults, civic rites, festivals, sanctuaries, and diverse stories. The Twelve Olympians are a well-known grouping, but their membership and arrangement differ across sources and periods.

Alongside Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Athena, and Apollo, Greek traditions include Demeter, Artemis, Aphrodite, Ares, Hermes, Hephaestus, Hestia, Dionysus, Hades, Persephone, Hecate, the Muses, and many others. Mythic narratives are not always identical to historical worship practice.

REGION AND SOURCES

Mainland Greece, the Aegean islands, Asia Minor, and Hellenic communities throughout the Mediterranean.

OPENING INVOCATION · CONTEMPORARY TEXT

Opening invocation for Greek Gods and Goddesses

Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Athena, Apollo, and the divine names honoured across Hellenic lands, receive this as an expression of learning and reflection. May our search for wisdom be guided by humility, and may old stories be read with respect for their contexts.

A contemporary invocation written for Parahyang; not an ancient quotation or reconstruction.
