Libation: Liquid Offerings in Ancient Traditions

A libation is the pouring of a liquid as an offering or gesture of reverence. In some ancient Greek and Roman contexts, wine, water, honey, or other liquids could be used according to the rite and circumstances. There was no single formula for every place and period.

Contemporary practice should consider historical context, community guidance, safety, and environmental impact. A symbolic offering need not involve hazardous or polluting materials.
